What Should We Do With the O.T. Law?
This series of blogs was brought on due to a discussion I had recently
with a few of my “Messianic” brothers and sisters in Christ. I want to say right off the bat, I very
much love and respect these brothers and sisters and I learn incredible
things from them… But we do not always agree on things. Which is
actually very good if you think about it because if we did agree 100%
on every little thing, chances are we would belong to a “cult” and not
to the Body of Christ. We can always find a point of disagreement
somewhere and that fact makes some people uncomfortable and they will
avoid those points like the plague. I for one however don’t mind them
at all, in fact, I see them as an opportunity for “iron to sharpen
iron”, providing it gets us to digging into God’s Word and not immature
ranting or name calling etc… (BTW, anyone that does that kind of
thing on my site gets deleted and blocked … just a polite heads up
for any new visitors.) You know we should be able to study together
and examine the Scriptures back and forth without contention. When
there is anger and contention that arises it is a sure sign there is
“pride and self-importance” at the center and NOT God! (I could go on
to the “whys” of this but that is another topic.)So let’s jump right in! To try to boil down what I think most of the
disagreements “center on” it would be this one question… “What should
we do with the
Old Testament Law?” I think I can say that most of my Messianic
friends will take the position that “all believers” whether Jew or
Gentile must keep all of the Levitical and Moral Laws of Moses except
for the sacrifices. (Correct me if I am wrong here.) The position
that I am taking in these writings is that we are “free” to follow the
Levitical Law or not as our personal conviction dictates. (The “Moral
law” is something that gets written on our hearts at Salvation and is
administered by the Holy Spririt.) Also, if as a believer in Christ we
do decide we want to follow the Levitical law we do so in a way that
looks to the
fact that Christ has fulfilled that requirement and we are practicing
something in remembrance of His finished work….. and not that our
attempting to conform closer to the Law makes us a more mature or
“better Christian” than a brother or sister who chooses not to follow
the Law.Beginning our Study
After much thought…. I decided I think Galatians is the place to
start. I will tell you why… I love Romans and it has a lot to say
concerning Law and Grace, but Paul gets rather lawyer-esqe (or complicated) in Romans. It is a large letter and is designed to be read all at once, but we
always pick it apart and it loses it’s context very easily that way…
so it is difficult, (and long.)I love Ephesians… and there is not doubt we will “visit” there, but
it has some rather “ethereal” passages that are kind of difficult. Not
to mention the main purpose of the book being to encourage believers
concerning who they are in Christ as opposed to specifically
concentrating on the Jew and Gentile distinction.So….. Galatians it is…. I will begin with the “intro” tomorrow. I am looking forward to it and getting back into the Word, hope you will join me!!
Love, Bee

I love your analogy of being “accepting” of others beliefs. At work we’re always told “do NOT discuss religion,” when I get into a conversation about God that’s overheard by management. I’m going to borrow that one if you don’t mind “if we did agree 100% on every little thing, chances are we would belong to a “cult” and not to the Body of Christ.” Bee? You couldn’t have said it better. I 110% agree with you. Christ fulfilled the requirement, and practicing Levitical law in remembrance of His finished work? I think is awesome! God Bless your Tuesday. I am DEFINITELY with you in reading Galations…will be back tomorrow.
This is great! Doug and I were JUST talking about this today. What good timing!
Thanks Bee – look forward to the posts and the conversation. The letter to the Galatians has such powerful teachings regarding this topic – thanks again – Bernie

Sounds interesting. Looking forward to reading your future posts! Blessings!
The law given us by YHVH remains in force, and New Testament scripture is packed full of evidence for that! Paul frequently wrote about laws and ordinances having been done away with, but he was not referring to God’s law, he was referring to the laws and ordinances of men which sprang up as adjuncts to God’s law, and made keeping God’s law a burden rather than a blessing. It’s important to consider the context of the verses in Galatians that many christians cite when claiming that the law is done away with, and all too frequently, people are taught not to.
Here’s Moses talking:
Jehovah spake with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire (I stood between Jehovah and you at that time, to show you the word of Jehovah: for ye were afraid because of the fire, and went not up into the mount), saying, I am Jehovah thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them; for I, Jehovah, thy God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the third and upon the fourth generation of them that hate me; and showing lovingkindness unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments. Thou shalt not take the name of Jehovah thy God in vain: for Jehovah will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. Observe the sabbath day, to keep it holy, as Jehovah thy God commanded thee. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work; but the seventh day is a sabbath unto Jehovah thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy man-servant and thy maid-servant may rest as well as thou. And thou shalt remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and Jehovah thy God brought thee out thence by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm: therefore Jehovah thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day. Honor thy father and thy mother, as Jehovah thy God commanded thee; that thy days may be long, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee. Thou shalt not kill. Neither shalt thou commit adultery. Neither shalt thou steal. Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbor. Neither shalt thou covet thy neighbor’s wife; neither shalt thou desire thy neighbor’s house, his field, or his man-servant, or his maid-servant, his ox, or his ass, or anything that is thy neighbor’s. These words Jehovah spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them upon two tables of stone, and gave them unto me. (Deuteronomy 5:4-22)
He added no more. There’s a reason Moses included that! He is distinguishing between the laws of YHVH and the laws of men, which would basically be anything other than what is written above. The laws given by our Eternal Father remain in force, all other ordinances instituted by man are done away with. There’s abundant confirmation of this in the New testament, including words spoken by Yahshua Himself:
Think not that I came to destroy the law or the prophets: I came not to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass away from the law, till all things be accomplished. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:17-19)
Yahshua taught that the law would remain in force till all be accomplished. He hasn’t returned. People still die. Satan hasn’t been cast into the lake of fire with the beast and his followers. New Jerusalem hasn’t come yet. Heaven and earth have not yet passed away. Much remains to be accomplished! How can anyone claim that the law is done away with when Yahshua Himself tells us that He did not come to accomplish that? After all, who is Yahshua?
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father), full of grace and truth. (John 1:1, 14)
And if Yahshua is the Word (and obviously He is), what must we understand about Him?
so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. (Isaiah 55:11)
But Yahshua certainly did distinguish between Father’s law and the laws of men, didn’t He? Take hand washing, for example…
Then there come to Jesus from Jerusalem Pharisees and scribes, saying, Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. And he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? (Matthew 15:1-3)
or the proper keeping of Sabbath law…
And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful? And he said unto them, Did ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was hungry, he, and they that were with him? How he entered into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the showbread, which it is not lawful to eat save for the priests, and gave also to them that were with him? And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: so that the Son of man is lord even of the sabbath. (Mark 2:24-28)
Please note that the Sabbath was made for man. Do these christians imagine that Yahshua had nothing to do with that?
All things were made through him; and without him was not anything made that hath been made. (John 1:3)
Look again at the verses concerning the Sabbath in Deuteronomy above. What did YHVH say it was about? Servitude! Nowhere did YHVH say that you couldn’t pluck some grain if you were hungry. Nowhere did YHVH say anything other than what is written above! And if YHVH didn’t say it, man did. That’s what’s been done away with – man’s additions to God’s law!
The position that I am taking in these writings is that we are “free” to follow the Levitical Law or not as our personal conviction dictates. (The “Moral law” is something that gets written on our hearts at Salvation and is administered by the Holy Spririt.) Also, if as a believer in Christ we do decide we want to follow the Levitical law we do so in a way that looks to the fact that Christ has fulfilled that requirement and we are practicing something in remembrance of His finished work….. and not that our attempting to conform closer to the Law makes us a more mature or “better Christian” than a brother or sister who chooses not to follow the Law.
Amen. I’m looking forward to reading more…
Looking forward to this. This does seem to be the “topic of the week” (or maybe month?! lol) with so many I know. I’m planning a few posts myself.
should be interesting around here!
I appreciate everyone’s input here…. let’s keep these thoughts in mind as we dig into the Word and “see if these things are so”… as the Berean’s did.
My husband is preaching through the book of Galatians beginning mid-August. I’ll look forward to your study as I prepare my heart to hear his sermons. Thanks! Q.’
The Lord bless us all through this study!
I anticipate this being a very interesting discussion indeed.
